UCV and refugees The news report considers the possible effects of the Conservatives' proposed new law regarding human smuggling. | Affordable Housing / Congregation Building Effort
|
|
Since January 2011, on the third Thurdays of the month, we have been meeting to promote a national affordable housing policy by writing letters to representatives in Ottawa. A new bill is working its way through parliament.
Our monthly letter-writing evenings have combined fellowship, excellent food and effective social justice activism. To all the dedicated people who have participated, a heartfelt thank you.
|
From Rev. Steven Epperson: “Thanks to the 150 people who signed the petition on November 25 in support of Bill C-400 that calls for a National Affordable Housing strategy. As well, on December 7, I will be joining UCV members in meeting with MLA Joe Trasolini, the Official Opposition Critic for Housing to urge the provincial NDP party to make affordable housing a priority in the upcoming provincial elections. The invitation to meet Mr. Trasolini came in response to letters sent to him by our Meet, Eat, Write group in October. Letter writing works!”
Your first time? Come and join us! Doors at Hewett Centre open at 5:30 pm, dinner at 6 pm. Bring a potluck dish. After dinner, we’ll write to our letters, and wrap up writing and cleanup by 7:15 pm. All are invited.

| Social Housing Stand
|
The UCV Social Justice Committee is one of several groups in Vancouver who have committed to standing for Social Housing from noon to 1 pm on Saturdays leading up to the provincial election in May. UCV members have occupied the corner of Oak and 49th for three Saturdays in November and December. We will resume the Stands again on January 12 and invite you to join us. Here are the dates we plan to stand at the corner of Oak and 49th, from noon to 1 pm.
Saturday, January 12
Saturday, January 26
Saturday, February 9
Saturday, February 23
It’s a fun way to spend an hour and demonstrate our commitment to social housing to passing motorists and pedestrians. Come stand with us!

| A Bog Burns
|
Hi, my name is Alexander Winstanley, and I was so moved by the Burns Bog pilgrimage that took place this year that I wrote this poem calling for social action. Enjoy.
A Bog Burns
Look at the earth
sogged and sopped between your toes:
this is Her magic;
this is the green carpet She walks on.
Spirits move through the cotton grass,
the aftermath of ice ages.
Rootless moss
dies and grows on itself.
This peat of weed
produces the world’s fresh water.
That old skunk cabbage
with its stench of passion
varies 40 degrees
from spathe to leaf,
its vegetable heart hot
with the macabre romance
of the mosquito.
And this Musqueam woman
sitting before me
in her swivel chair
in an office behind the Esso station.
We must lock arms about
this vestige of green.
Wise songs of fertility and
the gentle mounds of moss
trickle tears for the loss
of ecospheres
as they buoy riots of insects and flowers,
leaves and bowers.
Let the bog live inside the lowdown thrum of your heart
as it plays upon the chords of your ribs; the art
of some greater Being; though unseen,
She bathes Herself in deeper, ever deeper green.
